In 1918, some hospitals treated air like part of care.
In 1918, influenza hit Boston hard. Hospitals filled fast. Doctors and nurses had to make choices with the tools they had.

At Camp Brooks, near Boston, the sick were treated in open-air wards. Beds were spaced apart. Patients were wrapped warmly, but the air around them was fresh. Sunlight was part of the setting too.
Medical historians have written that this kind of outdoor treatment was used during the 1918 pandemic because packed indoor wards were dangerous. The comparison is not exact. A home in 2026 is not an Army camp in 1918. We also have different tools now.

That old way of looking can still help. When a respiratory virus rises, the question is not only “Who is sick?” The better first question may be, “What is the place doing to us?”
A still bedroom, a closed door, a crowded kitchen, and a long evening in one room can all turn place into pressure. A cracked window, a working fan, less crowding, and a short outdoor break can turn place into help.
Ancient medicine got many things wrong. But it did not make the modern mistake of treating environment as background. It treated environment as part of the case.
That is the useful ancient idea for today: before you try to control every exposure, improve the one place where your household spends the most shared air.
